Diwali 2026: a search and performance playbook for the final festive stretch

Dussehra fell on 20 October, so the first chapter of the festive season has closed. Three chapters remain: Dhanteras on 6 November, Diwali on 8 November, and the tail that runs through Bhai Dooj, Chhath Puja and Black Friday. This Diwali marketing strategy shows where to place search, performance media and AI visibility across each one.

Exchange4media describes Q4 as a connected season of roughly nine weeks with at least seven consumption occasions. One core idea adapts to each occasion, and each phase has its own job. Brands that give every remaining chapter a clear job spend with more purpose than brands that push one message until Diwali.

What the numbers say about the season ahead

Exchange4media reports that festive spending is expected to exceed ₹1.5 lakh crore this year. The Pitch Madison Advertising Report 2026 projects India’s total ad spend at ₹1,74,605 crore. Industry estimates put quick commerce at ₹11,000 to 12,000 crore in gross merchandise value over a 30 to 35 day window.

Last festive season, Unicommerce recorded 24% growth in e-commerce orders, 120% growth in quick commerce orders and 28% growth in Tier II cities. Fynd reported D2C order volumes up 16% year on year by August.

Most of these figures are projections. Use them to set direction, and let your own conversion data set the budget.

Chapter one review: use your Navratri data this week

Navratri has handed you three weeks of live results. Pull them before Dhanteras and answer three questions. Which campaigns produced orders at the lowest cost? Which cities outperformed? Which search terms drove revenue beyond clicks?

Move budget towards those answers now. A fresh week of your own data from an active season beats any benchmark.

Chapter two: Dhanteras week, up to 6 November

Dhanteras is a purchase day for gold, silver, utensils, electronics and vehicles. Search intent shifts from browsing to buying, and the brands that answer with a clear price, stock position and delivery date win the click.

  • Check stock and delivery promises on every landing page before raising bids.
  • Raise bids on high-intent product and location queries, and add delivery cut-off dates to ad copy.
  • Refresh Shopping feeds so prices and offers match your site.
  • Review your Google Ads automated assets. Since 12 October, Google pulls promotions from advertiser websites into Search and Performance Max ads by default, and you can switch this off in account-level settings. Confirm that every offer shown matches what you intend to run.

Chapter three: Diwali week, 8 November

Diwali week rewards pacing. Spend that runs out on 5 November leaves the highest-intent days unfunded, so set daily budgets against the days that follow.

Rotate creative every few days. Festive audiences tire of the same message quickly, and a fresh variant keeps click-through rates up.

Check what AI assistants say about your category. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for “best Diwali gift under ₹2,000” or the equivalent for your products, and record which brands appear. Gift guides with clear prices, specifications and delivery details give AI systems material to quote. Publish them on your own site before 6 November.

Chapter four: the tail from Bhai Dooj to Black Friday

Bhai Dooj falls on 10 or 11 November depending on region. Chhath Puja runs from 13 to 16 November. Black Friday falls on 27 November by the calendar, and Indian merchants had yet to announce events when sources were checked in late September.

This chapter belongs to returning customers. Retarget Diwali buyers with accessories, refills and review requests. Agencies quoted by Exchange4media advise concentrating hero investment on one or two moments where a brand has a real reason to participate. Decide now whether Black Friday is one of yours, and use creators, performance media or local content for the rest.

A seven-day checklist

  1. Export Navratri results by campaign, city and search term.
  2. Reallocate budget to the top performers.
  3. Audit landing pages for stock, price and delivery accuracy.
  4. Review automated promotions and feed offers.
  5. Set daily budgets that reach 8 November with funds in hand.
  6. Run a prompt check on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for your gifting queries.
  7. Build the retargeting audiences for the post-Diwali tail.

Frequently asked questions

Exchange4media describes the season as roughly nine weeks, starting around Navratri and continuing past New Year, with at least seven consumption occasions.
